The Benefits of Baby Massage

Updated: Feb 9, 2020

Baby massage is a wonderful skill to learn and it’s a great way to develop the bond between you and your baby.

In the early days of your baby’s life, it is important for your baby to be in close physical contact with you. Touch and eye to eye contact are essential for your baby’s development in all areas including emotional, mental, behavioural and physical. They are also one of the key ways you can communicate with your baby in the first few months.

WHAT IS BABY MASSAGE?

Baby massage involves the use of gentle massage strokes over each part of your baby’s body in turn, in a calm, reassuring, rhythmic way. It’s a way of having some regular special time alone with your baby and can be very soothing for both of you.

THE BENEFITS OF BABY MASSAGE

Massaging your baby will have various health benefits:

Bonding: Massaging your baby is a great way to show your baby they are loved and help them to feel secure. With each gentle stroke, your baby will feel nurtured and loved, strengthening the bond between the two of you.

Stimulation: The gentle strokes during the massage focus on different areas of the body. Touching your baby helps him to start to work out how different parts of the body move and work and improve their muscle tone.

Relief: Baby massage can bring relief from and alleviate symptoms of colic, reflux, constipation and even teething. Specific movements around the tummy and legs can aid digestion and wind, while special strokes around the cheeks, ears, and jaw can help with teething.

Relaxation: Baby massage is a calm, focused activity that is great for you and your baby. The quiet time together and skin on skin contact helps to release the feel-good chemical, Oxytocin into the body, helping the adult and baby relax. This may also improve their sleep.

BABY MASSAGE CLASSES

Joining a baby massage class can help you to learn the key massage strokes, become more confident at caring for your baby and develop a routine that works for you and your baby. It is also a great way to meet other mums and share your experiences.
