How to prepare for your Autumn Family Session at Ashridge Forest
My autumn sessions are a relaxed opportunity to spend some time together in the woods while I capture beautiful, natural photographs of your family. If you’re preparing for a family session in October or early November, this guide will help you choose what to wear and know what to expect.
Your Autumn Family Session at Ashridge Forest
Your Autumn Family Session will take place in Ashridge Forest. I’ll send the exact location and arrival details a few days beforehand.
Please arrive around 10 minutes early and allow time for parking and walking to our meeting point. As mini sessions run to a set schedule, arriving late may reduce your photography time.
What to wear
Choose two or three complementary colours and coordinate rather than match. Muted autumn shades photograph beautifully, including:
Cream, oatmeal and camel
Rust, mustard and burgundy
Olive or forest green
Brown, navy and soft denim
Knits, corduroy, wool and denim add warmth and texture. Avoid neon colours, large logos, character clothing, sportswear and too many competing patterns.
Outfit example
For a family of four:
Mum: cream knitted jumper, rust midi skirt and brown boots
Dad: olive jumper, tan chinos and brown boots
Daughter: rust or muted floral dress with a cream cardigan
Son: camel knit or corduroy shirt with dark jeans
Choose comfortable layers and practical footwear suitable for woodland paths and potentially muddy ground. Please also empty phones, keys and wallets from your pockets before the session.
What to bring
Keep belongings to a minimum, but consider bringing:
Water and wipes
A small, non-messy snack
A favourite little toy for younger children
A brush or hair clips
An extra layer or coat
Bright bags and bulky belongings can be distracting, so please leave these behind where possible.
Weather
Cloudy skies and even very light rain can create beautiful, soft photographs. I’ll monitor the forecast and contact you if the weather is unsuitable and we need to discuss an alternative or rearrange your session.
After your session
Your private proof gallery will be sent within one week. It will include the best unedited images from your session, together with a few edited examples to show you how the finished photographs will look.
The gallery will remain open for one week for you to choose the images included in your package and purchase any additional favourites.
Each chosen photograph will then be carefully hand-edited. Your finished gallery may take up to two to three weeks, although it will often be ready sooner.
Most importantly, relax and enjoy being together. The best photographs often come from the smallest moments - a cuddle, a laugh or a child reaching for your hand.
