Is my baby too old for newborn photos? A Harpenden Photographer’s Guide
Perhaps newborn photography was always on your list. Then your baby arrived and the first few weeks became a blur of feeds, cuddles, and very little sleep. Suddenly, you may be wondering whether you have left it too late.
Please don’t worry. Although the style of the session may change as your baby grows, there is no point at which they stop being worth photographing.
When is the best time for newborn photography?
My newborn sessions are best suited to babies between 5 and 15 days old. At this age, babies often sleep more deeply and naturally curl into the positions they held before birth.
This is the ideal time to capture those familiar newborn details: tiny toes, curled legs, sleepy expressions and the way your baby fits so perfectly in your arms.
If you are expecting, I recommend booking after your 20-week scan. The session is reserved around your due date, with the final date arranged once your baby arrives.

My baby is already here - can I still book?
Yes, it is always worth asking.
I sometimes have availability for a last-minute newborn photoshoot in Harpenden. You do not need to wait until you feel organised, and your baby does not need to sleep perfectly. Sessions allow plenty of time for feeding, changing, soothing and cuddles.
If your baby is older than two weeks, they may be more alert, stretch out more and sleep less deeply. Some traditional newborn poses may no longer be suitable, but we can still create beautiful photographs of their expressions, eye contact and connection with you.
What if we have missed the newborn stage?
If your baby has passed the traditional newborn window, we can arrange a relaxed family photography session with your baby instead.
These sessions are just as beautiful and worthwhile. Rather than focusing on sleepy newborn poses, we capture your baby as they are now: resting in your arms, looking up at you, holding your finger or beginning to show their personality.
There is something special to remember at every age. Your photographs do not become less meaningful because your baby is a few weeks older. They simply tell a slightly different part of your family’s story.

My newborn and baby sessions take place in my cosy North Harpenden studio. My style is simple, natural and timeless, without excessive props or passing trends.
Black-and-white photographs can be especially powerful. Without colour competing for attention, you notice the tiny details, the tenderness of your touch and the emotion of those early days together.

Many new mums feel tired or uncomfortable in front of the camera after giving birth. But your baby will not look back and notice whether you felt camera-ready. They will see how safely they fitted in your arms and how deeply they were loved.
I will guide you gently, so nothing needs to feel staged or uncomfortable.
